MOON RIVER!
GIANT SPINNING ICE DISK A CHILLING SIGHT
FORGET crop circles! A giant spinning disk of ice on a river in Maine looked like a humongous frozen pizza for aliens!
Crowds lined the Presumpscot River in Westbrook to catch a visual slice of the world’s largest ice disk.
The supernatural-looking circle measured a whopping 300 feet across and spun like a lazy Susan on the river for days — with several lucky ducks along for the ride!
“I was just speaking to my sister in England … I said, ‘We’ve made national news.’ And she texted me back and she said, ‘No, you haven’t made national, you’ve made international. You were just on the BBC!’” said local resident Boston-based meteorologist Eric Fisher said the rotation of the ice was caused by the river’s current and temperature changes in the water underneath the ice, creating a vortex that sent the frozen frisbee into its marathon spin!
“The shore in this case acts almost like a grinding wheel where the ice hits the coasr and its starts to shave off," Eric explained.
“It creates this perfect pizza shape of the ice disk there floating in the water!” Although ice disks aren’t unheard of, this particular phenomenon was exceptional.
Typical ice disks range from 30 to 50 feet, according to Steven Daly, who specializes in river ice hydraulics for the Army Corps of Engineers.
“They had the perfect combination of air temperature, ice production and flow conditions for this to form … and it may not happen again for a number of years,” he added.
And that’s how this eerie disk spun its way to the top of this week’s Odd List!
