Parents battle her dad’s ex over assets
REESE WITHERSPOON has been dragged into a bizarre divorce drama involving her mom, her accused bigamist dad and his second wife, according to legal documents examined by The National ENQUIRER.
Sources said the actress,
44, who did not respond to a request for comment, has been helping her parents untangle the nightmare as they try to freeze out her dad’s “ex!” In 2018 divorce documents, Patricia Anne Taylor Witherspoon — who goes by the name Tricianne — accused Reese’s dad, Dr. John Witherspoon, of deserting her and running back to the star’s mom, Betty Reese, 71.
The retired physician and Betty separated in 1996, but they never divorced, and
Betty sued him for bigamy in 2012 after he wed Tricianne. The bigamy suit was eventually dismissed.
In her court documents, Betty claimed her hubby told her he didn’t even know his new
wife!
In the legal papers, Betty also said she and John lived apart because of his “alcoholism, infidelity, overspending and hoarding,” and feared he “may be suffering from early onset of dementia.”
Betty also accused Tricianne of “posing as the wife,” taking out loans using the name “Mrs. John Witherspoon” and altering the man’s will. In 2019 Betty filed papers to intervene in John’s divorce case, saying she didn’t believe he was “mentally equipped to protect his own interests,” adding his marriage to Tricianne was never “legal or valid.”
In his own 2019 filing,
John claimed he’d “never divorced” Betty and was living in her Nashville home. Tricianne fought back, filing a copy of their 2012 marriage certificate and asking the court for equal division of their assets and spousal support for the last eight years.
A hearing on their divorce is set for later in September. “This is one big mess,” said a source. “Reese loves both her parents dearly, but if this drags on, she may have to get her own lawyers involved.”
