Tell us about your eighth book.

It’s called The Takedown of America, and it’ll be out in about six months. America is turning into a different place because people, not the majority, but people with big mouths or a lot of money hate this country.

You also have a book titled Don’t Lie to Me: And Stop Trying to Steal Our Freedom. How do you spot a liar?

The easiest way is to put them on the witness stand and cross-examine them. That’s what’s so crazy about some of the stuff going on in Washington right now. They put someone on a witness stand, and nobody crossexami­nes them, and they say, “That’s a truth-teller!” How do you know that’s a truth-teller when they don’t withstand the test of cross-examinatio­n, which is an age-old test? There is more than just the spoken word that indicates whether or not someone is telling the truth. Judge the way they carry themselves and the way they say something. Does this sound right to you? Is it consistent with everything else? Were they shifty-eyed? Was it the kind of thing a normal person would do?

Congratula­tions on The Five breaking records as the first non-primetime program to top all of cable news in three consecutiv­e quarters. What’s the secret to the show’s success?

It’s a combinatio­n of a bunch of smart people who get along, even though they disagree with each other in some cases. It’s an enjoyable show, and it’s up to the minute. We very often are the first people to talk about the hot issues coming out.
