PIGS BRING SIGHT TO THE BLIND!
AN OCULAR implant derived from pig collagen restored sight to 20 people with diseased corneas — including 14 who were fully blind, researchers say.
Scientists at Sweden’s Linkoping University created the lens using the protein naturally found in pig skin, a common food industry by-product. Professor Neil Lagali says, “The results show it is possible to develop a biomaterial for human implant which can be mass produced and stored up to two years. This gets us around the problem of a shortage of donated corneal tissue.” Corneal damage affects an estimated 12.7 million people worldwide.
