GRAPES ADD YEARS TO YOUR LIFE
SNACKING on grapes daily may add up to five years to your life by combating the effects of unhealthy junk food, a new study suggests. The juicy superfood — rich in chemicals that can increase gut bacteria and lower cholesterol — flushes out refined fats and sugars in processed foods, according to researchers at Western New England University. Grapes also contain antioxidants, which can reduce inflammation, potentially slashing the risk of heart disease and cancer. In lab experiments, mice were fed a typical Western high-fat diet — but also received a daily powdered grape supplement equal to a small container of the fruit. The findings showed the rodents had less fatty liver disease and lived longer than mice who didn’t consume the grape product!
Study co-author Dr. John Pezzuto says the results, which translated to an additional four to five years in the life of a human, are “astonishing!”
The team also found grapes improved neuron function, potentially protecting against Alzheimer’s disease, and appeared to help burn calories by increasing metabolism.
“The lifelong addition of grapes to a high-fat diet increases longevity,” says Pezzuto.
