DODGER STAR DIED CARRYING TORCH FOR DORIS DAY!

Racism doomed Maury’s torrid fling

-

BASEBALL legend Maury Wills went to his grave filled with regret he didn’t marry the love of his life — Doris Day!

Wills, who passed away on Sept. 19 at age 89, carried on a torrid love affair with Day in the early 1960s, when he was a star shortstop for the Los Angeles Dodgers and she was the Golden Girl of Hollywood.

“They were both married at the time, but they would steal away for midnight trysts,” reveals a source. “They were deeply in love.

“Doris showered Maury with gifts and cheered him on from the stands. They dreamed of a day when they would leave their spouses and be together.”

But the pioneering Black superstar eventually ended the affair, believing their interracial romance would doom his career.

“Doris cried when I told her it was over,” Wills wrote in his 1992 autobiography. “It’s sad to think what might have been. If only we had met 30 years later.”

Day died in 2019 at the age of 97.

“Maury regretted breaking up with Doris to his dying day,” says the source.

“He wished he had been braver and granted her wish to profess their love in the light of day.”
