HOW TO WALK YOUR CAT ON A LEASH SAFELY
We have a young male cat who is a really great pet. He spends a lot of time on the back of a chair watching the world go by. My daughter thinks he would love going outside for walks on a leash. Can he be taught to do so?
■ YES, some cats — but certainly not all — seem to enjoy leash walks. Cats that are outgoing and curious are the best candidates. Some tips if your daughter decides to do this: Select a harness and leash designed for cats so he cannot wiggle out.
The leash should be short enough to maintain control — she wouldn’t and couldn’t be in control if the cat is at the end of a 20-foot recoiltype leash. Do not attach a leash to a standard collar around your cat’s neck. Slowly start with short training sessions in the house. The first few outside adventures should be in a secure, fenced-in area. Don’t expect the cat to “heel” at your side like a dog.
Walks will be a meandering exploration. Choose areas free of heavy traffic and offleash dogs. You might also want to bring along a cat carrier in case something startles your pet.
