Ganessa Frey is a contemporary basket weaver who maintains strong ties to Penobscot basketmaking materials and forms, while refining techniques and style. She brings a new aesthetic to traditional forms, whether in the extra-fine weave of a pumpkin or strawberry basket, the complex structure of leaves on the cover of a pineapple basket, or the fine points and unusual color combinations of a corn basket. In Baskets of Time, Frey discusses the importance of preventing further loss of Native American culture in contemporary times. Frey feels the work of the artist is just as important as the efforts of those who keep language, ceremonies and/or spirituality of the Wabanaki and other Indian nations alive.
