What do you think?
I was very inspired after interviewing Jill Ahlberg Yohe and Teri Greeves about the five-year process they underwent in bringing us the beautiful gift that is known as Hearts of Our People: Native Women Artists. When so many talented people get together who share a singular focus, you know that the outcome will be something for the ages. This exhibition opens June 2 at the Minneapolis Institute of Art and then travels to the Frist Museum in Nashville, the Renwick Gallery at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C., before closing at the Philbrook Museum of Art in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in the summer of 2020.
Of the many things that struck me about this exhibition, one of the more groundbreaking aspects of the process, was the shared vision of all those involved, from the two initial curators to each and every member of the 21-person advisory board. This communal approach to curating the exhibition led to me thinking about ways to incorporate the same approach to writing about it. I think this is a very important exhibition, and far more important than something that can be discussed in one article in this magazine written by myself.
I think a more lasting way to write about the exhibition is for you to go see it and then write your own response and send it to me at joshuarose@nativeamericanartmagazine.com. While our article can only provide one voice, having you write and respond to the exhibition with your own personal experiences, understanding and knowledge will only give a more full and rich understanding of this exhibition and its influence in the contemporary Native art world.
So here is what I’m suggesting: travel to Minneapolis, spend time with this exhibition, give it some thought and then write a 250 to 500 word response to the show. I will publish at least one response in each issue of the magazine for the duration of the exhibition and then we will publish more in the digital version of the magazine. Again, you can send your reviews/ responses to joshuarose@nativeamericanartmagazine.com.
This is the first time we’ve ever done anything like this! I’m excited for the results.
Sincerely,
Joshua Rose Editor
