Native American Art

Here Come the Neighborhoods

-

Creating Native American Art Magazine has been such a wonderful and rewarding journey. One of the reasons for this is that, until we launched over three years ago, no one had ever attempted to publish a magazine that included both historic and contemporary art in each issue. One of the ways we decided to connect these two separate yet related worlds is through our special sections devoted to a variety of different art forms. Obviously, these sections merely scratch the surface of the knowledge and artistic output that exists out there today, be it katsina carvers, textiles, beadwork or jewelry. But we feel that they have provided useful and relevant information of both the artists working today and those who have come before them. The beauty of Native art is more often than not the contemporary artists are descendants of the historic ones and often times they are even creating in the same studios.

Look for more of these sections as we progress into the future and gain a better understanding of the intricacies of all these art forms.

Something we have not tried until now, this issue, is looking at the entire artistic output of various geographic regions across the country. Our Northwest Coast special section is included in this issue and is our first attempt at looking at one such region. Obviously, this is just the beginning and we could’ve filled 100 magazines with articles about this widely loved and respected art tradition. But the articles included in this section will help you gain a better understanding of the art traditions coming out of this part of the country.

Look for more such sections throughout the coming years. And, if you have an idea for another special section we haven’t touched on yet, please email it to me at joshuarose@nativeamericanartmagazine.com.

Sincerely, Joshua Rose Editor

P.S. We have some more surprises we are about to launch that will change the way historic and contemporary Native art is bought and sold in this country. Stay tuned for details!
