DENVER, CO

On November 7, Hindman will host its next Arts of the American West sale with more than 400 lots hitting the market, including Western art, Native American art and jewelry. In the Native American art segment of the sale, there will be a strong mix of both historic and contemporary pieces available to collectors. This selection of items allows for an expansive array of interests to be met throughout the categories of Native American art.

In the painting and sculpture segment of the sale, highlights include work by Frtiz Scholder, Allan Houser, Dan Namingha, Kevin Red Star, Earl Biss and Mateo Romero, among others. Offerings include Houser’s bronze He Will Be Home Soon (est. $30/50,000) and Red Star’s Bad Bear and His Medicine Shield (est. $4/6,000).

“We are excited about the strength of our beadwork session and as our playing field has greatly expanded as a company [with joining Hindman and Cowan’s Auctions], we’re excited to watch the growth of the category,” says Maron Hindman, vice president of the West at Hindman. Included in the beadwork segment of the sale is a beaded vest that is an ex-fred Harvey collection piece. The work, as Hindman explains, is well executed and in good condition, and pictorially it features riders and American flags. The vest is expected to sell between $20,000 and $30,000.

A late classic child’s blanket from the fourth quarter of the 19th century will also cross the block. The piece, which has a presale estimate of $10,000 to $15,000, was dye tested and identified as woven with raveled bayeta and hand-spun

indigo and cream. It measures 50 by 30 inches. Other notable items include a Western Apache polychrome olla (est. $10/15,000) and a rare Yokut pictorial basket that is estimated at $7,000 to $9,000.

There also will be a collection of contemporary jewelry by Wes Willie arriving at auction, as well as pottery from Nancy Youngblood, Nathan Youngblood, Maria Martinez and Carmelita Dunlap. A carved redware jar by Santa Clara artist Margaret Tafoya is another noteworthy piece, carrying an estimate of $5,000 to $7,000.

The Arts of the American West sale marks the first major collaborative effort between Hindman and Cowan’s Auctions since their partnership began earlier this year.
