Hindman’s upcoming Arts of the American West sale will feature more than 300 works by contemporary Native American artists including Navajo textiles, baskets and beadwork, as well as 20th-century Western art, sculpture and more. The May 8 sale will take place at its new 7,000-square-foot salesroom in Denver’s River North Art District.
“We are very excited to be a part of this up-andcoming neighborhood. It’s appropriate that we have opened this new location with an auction marking a new chapter for both Cowan’s and Hindman,” says Danica Farnand, director of American Indian Art at Hindman/cowan’s. “This auction illustrates what our great teams can do together, handling a variety of Western and Native art that should satisfy collectors at all price points.”
The Contemporary Southwestern session of the sale will offer up works by Native artists Fritz Scholder, John Nieto, Allan Houser, Dan Namingha and Earl Biss. A bold and vibrant acrylic, Nieto’s Good Voice Eagle, 1988, is estimated to sell for $7,000 to $9,000, while his Feather Dancer has an estimate of $10,000 to $15,000. Other highlights in the sale include Abstract Crown Dancer by Houser, an abstract bronze piece created in 1991 (est. $15/25,000) and Scholder’s Untitled Portrait with Skull (est. $10/15,000).
A variety of works will be in the jewelry section by artists like Charles Loloma, Gail Bird, Yazzie Johnson and Jesse Monongya, among others. One of the jewelry highlights is an 18-karat yellow gold, coral, turquoise and lapis inlay cuff bracelet (est. $10/15,000), and a yellow gold and multi-stone inlay cuff by Monongya,
which is estimated at $15,000 to $20,000.
Contemporary pottery highlights include a raised-neck pot in two glazed colors by Nathan Youngblood, projected to sell between $3,000 and $5,000, as well as a shaped-coil vessel by Richard Zane Smith (est. $2/4,000).
