United Way honors 4 people for service

NEW HAVEN — Four community members were recognized for their service to United Way of Greater New Haven at a celebratio­n on May 10. They are:

Ted Norris, vice president of asset management of the Regional Water Authority, who received the Corporate Champion Award. The 2017 RWA campaign had nearly twice the number of donors it had the previous year.

Michael Morand, public relations and communicat­ions officer at the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Yale University, who received the Legacy Award for his decades of service to United Way as a donor, a key communicat­ions strategist for the campaign and as the Yale-United Way campaign chairman for two years.

Cristina Hernandez, human resources administra­tor, and Jerome Barillon, vice president and general manager, both from KX Technologi­es, received the Rising Star Award. They significan­tly increased their company’s involvemen­t with United Way, held multiple supply drives for children and families in need, and secured a first corporate match program that doubled the impact of individual employee donations to United Way.

Fish fry is benefit for awards

HAMDEN — A fish fry will be hosted by the Hamden Black History Committee and the Office of the Mayor from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

The event will be held at Friendship Baptist Church, 26 Edwards St., Hamden. Dinner is $13; a sandwich is $10.

Storm debris cleanup in Hamden

HAMDEN — The town began collecting storm debris left on residentia­l curbs June 11.

For pickup: tree stumps, branches and limbs, no longer than 6 feet and placed in the right of way. Do not block the street or mailboxes. Grass, leaves, constructi­on or home debris will not be picked up. Each street will be done once.

Collection of storm debris will be done only on these streets, and in this order: Scrub Oak Road, Dover Road, Lawncrest Drive, Evergreen Place, Coventry Circle, Bowling Green Drive, Bradley Street, Donmar Court, Kimberly Circle, Hartford Turnpike north of Bishop Street, Todd Drive, Koczak Court, Todd Drive South, Christine Road, Leighton Court, Eleanor Road.

Upper State Street north of Chapman Court, Charles Court, Southgate Lane, Jones Farm

Camp is for children with asthma

NEW HAVEN — The Department of Parks and Recreation and the Health Department are holding the third annual Camp Easy Breezy for children with asthma and their siblings this summer.

Campers will be told how to use their asthma medication­s, identify asthma triggers and better control their asthma while taking part in traditiona­l camp activities and field trips. Registered nurses will be on site during normal camp hours, as well as field trips.

The camp is a component of the Asthma Alliance program designed to reduce the impact of asthma on low-income children in New Haven.

The camp will be held June 25 to Aug. 3 at Beecher School. The cost for the six-week program is $300. Financial assistance is available for those with a demonstrat­ed need. RSVP: https://www.newhavenct.gov/gov/depts/parks/ default.htm or 203-946-8020.

Summer concerts are for families

HAMDEN — The Hamden Recreation Department presents its Summer Family Concert Series at 6 p.m. Wednesdays at Larry’s Playground at Bassett Park.

Unusable, unwanted flags accepted at office

NORTH HAVEN — In honor of Flag Day on Thursday, old and unusable American flags are being accepted through June at Guertin and Guertin, LLC, the Center Fire House, 26 Broadway.
