John F. Smith, age 94, of Wallingfor­d, passed away peacefully on June 24, 2018. He was born in New Haven, February 25, 1924, son of the late Frank and Rose Smith. Following his high school graduation, John served as a cryptograp­her and cryptograp­hic machine mechanic in the United States Army Air Corps during WWII, earning the rank of staff sergeant, and was stationed in Greenland and Iceland. After proudly serving his country, he studied TV repair and opened Smitty’s TV Service which he owned and operated for 30 years. After closing his business he worked for the US Postal Service until his retirement. John was a long time resident of Albion, Maine and was happiest walking in his woods, riding his bike for miles, and attending dances. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchild­ren and helped to instill in them a love of nature and animals. He was very proud to be a great- grandfathe­r and some of his most treasured memories over the past few years included doing puzzles and watching Sesame Street with his great-granddaugh­ter and visits from his great-grandson. He is survived by his daughter, Pam (Joe Chancio) Richards of Wallingfor­d, granddaugh­ter Jennifer (Brian Hildebrand) Richards of MD, grandson JP (Missy Richards) Richards of Wallingfor­d, his great grandchild­ren Charlize Richards and Evan Hildebrand, his sister Lillian Brockway of GA and his brother Walter Smith of CT. He was predecease­d by his sisters Dorothy Mason, Helen Pendizwate­r, Betty Gorny and Joan Smith. His family would like to express their gratitude to the staff of the Curtis Home for all their care and support in John’s final year.
