Southwest Airlines warns mechanics

Citing an “operational emergency” in a memo last Friday, Southwest Airlines threatened to fire mechanics if any fail to produce a doctor’s note after calling in sick, according to the Chicago Business Journal and CNBC. Southwest grounded 20 planes last Friday after having insufficient personnel on hand to handle maintenance needs. The Wall Street Journal reported separately Monday that the Federal Aviation Administration has been investigating whether Southwest correctly estimates the weight of luggage and cargo.
