Performing arts center stage at Kate’s Camp

-

Kate’s Camp for Kids is a complete immersion in the arts, with portions of the day dedicated to singing, dancing, acting, and visual arts. The campers learn four to five songs; learn one or two dances; memorize their lines and blocking; and create all of their own costumes, props, and sets – all in one week! The camp culminates in a 30-minute performance, which is a complete mini-musical. It’s pretty incredible!

As jam-packed as the week is, the kids love it. It is hands down the Community Music School’s (CMS) most loved program. Here’s a quote from one of last summer’s parents: “My daughter is super excited. She did four different camps this past summer and Kate’s Camp was by far her favorite!”

Many campers enroll in multiple camp sessions throughout the summer and the program has an excellent retention rate from year to year.

Some campers have a particular interest in music, dance, theatre, or art, but not necessarily all of them. Some have significant experience in a particular genre, but many are brand new to the arts! No previous experience is required and complete beginners are welcome. Children with advanced skills are offered bigger speaking parts, or vocal or dance solos to showcase their talents. Every ability level is accommodated. This is a good introduction to the arts for young children whose parents might want them to try it out before investing in something longer term during the school year. Need-based financial aid is also available, which can be a big help for many families.

Kate’s Camp is a partnership between Community Music School in Essex and the Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center in Old Saybrook.
