Milford Elks give money to group that helps feed kids

MILFORD — The Milford Elks Lodge 1589 recently gave Milford Food 2 Kids a $2,000 check as part of the Elks National Foundation’s Gratitude Grant.

Gratitude Grants are awarded to lodges that meet the national president’s per-member goal for giving to the foundation financially.

They are used to support one of six broad categories: relief for the poor, distressed, or underprivileged; to advance education or science, but not through scholarships; to lessen the burdens of government; to reduce neighborhood tensions; to eliminate prejudice and discrimination, or to combat juvenile delinquency.

Due to the current COVID-19 crisis, the Elks National Foundation opened grant applications early this year to help local lodges provide much-needed assistance to their communities.

Milford Elks Lodge 1589 presented the grant to Food 2 Kids on May 22 to support its current collaboration with Milford Public Schools Food Services. Together Food 2 Kids and MPS ensure Milford children are fed every day during the pandemic.

To support Milford students during the shift to distance learning, MPS Food Services has been providing all school children under the age of 18 who express need with weekday breakfasts and lunches.

Milford Food 2 Kids is also working with MPS Food Services to provide weekend food for more than 670 students in town.

The lodge has supported the Milford Food 2 Kids programs for several years by awarding grant money, volunteering with food drives, packing food to be delivered to school students for the weekend, and holding a First Responder Food 2 Kids Food Drive competition between Milford Police, Milford Fire and Nelson ambulance.
