A better choice
As the entire country and the state of Connecticut has been devastated and concerned with the recent events between citizens and police, the debate continues in our state Legislature. On July 23, after hours of intense bargaining and negotiation, Bill No. 6004 passed. The bill passed 86-58, but the question of immunity still hung in the air. There was a 72 -72 tie, as the house tally machine was kept open for 45 minutes while both caucuses frantically enlisted the support of the rank and file for or against the amendment.
Representative Josh Elliott (D-Hamden), well known for his vocal stances, passed on the opportunity to further his stated goals to advance progressive legislature in Hartford. Where was he, home sleeping? He later wrote in a Facebook post that the blame truly lies with the Black and Puerto Rican Caucus. You see, their 45-minute extension on the debate of qualified immunity forced him to choose between his elected position in Hartford or taking care of his dog. He went home to let the dog out. We all have responsibilities and while no one would fault someone for taking care of their animal, under the recent concerns on this matter, anyone would realize this was going to be a lengthy debate and make arrangements for situations as such. Elliott made the decision to take a nap after tending to his animal resulting in his missing this crucial vote.
Regardless of your opinion on Bill No. 6004 as voters I think can all agree this one was too important to miss. His actions make a mockery of the citizens who elected him and embarrass his constituents in Hartford. In the end, Elliott’s absence may have been for the best, as recent plans for a “Back the Blue” demonstration in Hamden have indicated that a plurality of voters disagree with Elliott’s aggressive stand on defunding police and stripping them of legal protection.
Maybe a change to have Kathy Hoyt represent us in Hartford is in order. Knowing Kathy I doubt she would ever miss casting her all-important vote.
