Garden club announces contests, events

NORTH HAVEN — Members of the North Haven Garden Club are holding a number of events and contests heading into the holiday season.

Fundraiser: The club is selling handmade birdseed wreaths and baskets. The sale is the club’s only fundraiser for this year. “The wreaths and baskets make a wonderful gift for that someone who loves birds or for that hard to buy person in your life,” members said. Three different sizes are available: a large, 10-inch feeder with a mesh bag and decorative bow for $15; a small feeder, with a decorative hanger for $5; and an ornament-size feeder for $2, $3 or $4. Baskets are also available in 3 sizes and prices, small, medium and large, for $35,

$25 and $15. Custom orders are available. The deadline is Nov. 30 and orders must be prepaid. Make checks out to the Wreaths/baskets can be delivered for $5.

Essay Contest: The club’s Youth Program is participat­ing in the National Garden Clubs High School Essay Contest 2020-21. All essays are due by Jan. 10. The topic of the essay is “Adapting Our Actions To Protect Our Natural Habitats.” The contest is open to students in grades 9-12. Essay must be 600-700 words, each word will be counted. The national winner receives a $1,000.00 scholarshi­p. Second place receives a $100 scholarshi­p. Scholarshi­ps will be awarded to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners, all others will receive a Honorable Mention Certificat­e along with a certificat­e from Federated Garden Clubs, Inc. Poetry contest: The club’s Youth Program is participat­ing in the National Garden Clubs Annual Poetry Contest for 2020-21, which is open to North Haven students in grades K-9. The contest theme is “Exploring Backyard Mysteries.” Five grand prizes and a certificat­e will be awarded to the winners from the North Haven Garden Club along with a certificat­e from The Federated Garden Clubs of CT. Categories are K-first, second-third, fourth fifth, sixth-seventh, and eighth ninth grades. The club had two winners in 2018-19 and one winner in 2019-20, who were published and received a book and prize from Federated Garden Clubs of CT.

All entries are due to Youth Chair Cindy Golia on or before Jan. 10. Mail mail all entries to The North Haven Garden Club, Attn. Cindy Golia, 12 Stanton Road, North Haven, CT 06473.

Sculpture Contest: In conjunctio­n with the National Garden Club, the club is holding a sculpture contest. Prizes from the North Haven Garden Club will be given out to winning students in each grade. The deadline is Jan. 10. Email nhgccindy@yahoo.com for a copy of the entry form.
