Four family members hit by car and injured
FAIRFIELD — Four family members were injured when they were hit by a driver while crossing the road Thursday afternoon, according to police.
Around 1:10 p.m., police received several 911 calls about a group of pedestrians who were hit by a vehicle near the intersection of Black Rock Turnpike and Stillson Road.
Officers found five pedestrians were trying to cross Black Rock Turnpike at its section when four of them — two adult women with a 1-year-old and a 4-year-old — were hit in the crosswalk by a car turning left onto Black Rock Turnpike from Stillson Road, police said.
The four victims were taken to Bridgeport Hospital with minor injuries. The fifth pedestrian, a 5-year-old, was pushed to safety by one of the women, police said. All five are related and live in West Haven.
The driver of the vehicle, a Danbury resident, stopped and stayed at the scene. She was not hurt.
Investigators learned that the pedestrians and the driver contributed to the incident.
“It was determined the operator of the striking car complied with all traffic control signals, however, had mounted a GPS unit on left side of the front windshield, obstructing the view of the pedestrians,” police said.
The crosswalk on Black Rock Turnpike is also a controlled crosswalk, and investigators learned that the cross button and the light were working, but not used by the pedestrians.
“The Fairfield Police Department reminds operators to ensure their windshields are clear from any obstructions to prevent incidents like this from happening,” police said. “Pedestrians are also remind to be obey pedestrians crossing signals at intersections.”
