Nancy Ryan, 72, of New Haven died peacefully on Friday, May 14 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. Nancy is the wife of the late Edward Steinberg and is survived by daughter Jennifer (Ryan) and her husband Richard Schaefer, granddaugh­ter Zoe Schaefer, and brother Jim Kanous. Nancy was predecease­d by her parents Jay and Bertha Kanous, brother Don, and sister Shirley.

Nancy was born in Rochester NY and moved to New Haven in the early 1970’s to work for Yale University, where she remained on staff in the CMHC until her retirement in 2013. Nancy was a proud member of Local 34 and served on many committees and in executive positions to help better the lives of Yale employees. She was excited by her days on the picket line and at social protests. Nancy was a fierce believer in women’s rights and equality of all people; she loved political debate and would stand up for what she believed to be right.

Those who knew Nancy will remember her quick wit, her love of laughter, her obsessive creations with Lego bricks, and her willingnes­s to look silly if it brought a smile to someone’s face. She loved her family, her many friends, her cats, the movies, Stephen King books, and bragging about her granddaugh­ter.

Services will be private. Donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Associatio­n.
