WEST HAVEN — Local companies and a city councilman are teaming up to benefit the city’s animal shelter with a donation drive set for this weekend.

The “West Haven BARKS and Meows” Animal Shelter Drive will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, according to a release.

The event is a joint effort by Apple Oil Co., Star Distributors Inc. and Councilman Barry Lee Cohen, R-10, the release said.

“Both Sam Livieri Jr., president of Apple Oil, and Tony Gallo, president of Star Distributors, enthusiastically signed up to sponsor this event,” Cohen said in the release.

“Both lead long-established and respected West Haven businesses that have a proud history of supporting charitable causes throughout our community. Apple and Star are just two more reasons why West Haven rocks!”

The drive will be held in the parking lot of Off Shore Restaurant & Lounge, 852 Jones Hill Road.

Pandemic health guidelines, including face masks and gloves, will be in play.

Donors can simply pop their car trunk for volunteers to retrieve donations.

According to the release, some items sought for the animal shelter include “dog, cat and kitten food (wet and dry), dog and cat treats, cat litter, dog toys (for tough chewers), bully sticks, cat beds, slip leads, pee pads and feliway diffusers.”

Checks made payable to West Haven Animal Shelter will also be accepted, it said.
