Federal relief funds aiding Shelton sewer pipes

SHELTON — Sections of the city’s sewer system will be getting an upgrade thanks to the federal government.

The Board of Aldermen, at its Aug. 18 meeting, approved spending $692,950 for repairs to the sewer system on Bridgeport Avenue, extending from Nells Rock Road to Johns Street - with the funds coming from the American Rescue Plan.

Mayor Mark Lauretti said this type of work has been ongoing for 15 years, but this section is the current focus.

“This is the most sensitive area,” Lauretti said of the pipes along this stretch. “Because of the age of these pipes, they need attention.”

Insituform Technologies, LLC, of Chesterfield, Mo., has been retained to put a liner in the main sanitary sewer pipe, which measures about 7,600 feet.

IV, in a letter to the aldermen, said the liner is necessary because the acidic nature of wastewater is compromising the cement pipe’s integrity. If the work is not done, he said, the pipe could collapse.
