UConn makes Floyd Jr.’s arrival official
UConn has made Corey Floyd Jr.’s arrival official, a little more than a week after the prized recruit announced he would reclassify and join coach Dan Hurley and Co. on campus this fall.
“We are tremendously excited to add Corey to our UConn family,” Hurley said Tuesday in a statement. “Corey is the embodiment of a UConn guard; tough, athletic, skilled and confident.”
Floyd, a 6-foot-3 guard from Roselle Catholic High School in New Jersey, committed to UConn in January. Two other Top-100 products in next year’s class — Bristol 7-footer Donovan Clingan and Massachusetts forward Alex Karaban — joined him on board this summer, giving Hurley two more building blocks for the future.
But Floyd, ranked No. 81 in 2022 by ESPN, has chosen to get a head start on his basketball education.
“Corey is a seamless fit within our culture and works to the championship standard we expect of our players and coaches alike,” said Hurley, noting that Floyd comes from a great pedigree. His father, Corey Sr., played at Providence College and was also an AAU teammate of Hurley and his older brother, Bobby, in the 1980s.
With Tyler Polley and Isaiah Whaley deciding to return, plus the addition of 2021 commits Samson Johnson, Rahsool Diggins and Jordan Hawkins, UConn’s rotation figures to be crowded this season.
That said, Floyd is willing to do whatever it takes to fit in. He told Hearst Connecticut Media that he’s talked with the coaching staff about redshirting, though it’s not his preferred option.
“I’m not trying to hold myself back from anything. I don’t want to go in there with the mindset that I’ll sit the year out,” said Floyd, who doesn’t turn 18 until January. “I’ll go in there and try to prove myself and play my game as normal. And we’ll just see what happens from there.”
Floyd averaged 16.5 points, 4.1 rebounds and 2.8 assists this past season at Roselle Catholic. He also helped lead his AAU squad, Team Final, to the Peach Jam 17U championship in July, notching 12 points and five assists in the final.
