Avelo, Tweed begin hiring for 100 new New Haven jobs.
NEW HAVEN — Avelo Airlines and Tweed New Haven Regional Airport began accepting applications Wednesday for more than 100 new jobs that will be based at the airport to support Avelo’s new service between Tweed and four Florida destinations.
The jobs will be phased in by the end of the year and are part of $100 million in airport renovations and expansion that includes Avelo establishing Tweed as its first East Coast base of operations, Avelo and Tweed said in a release.
The jobs include airport customer service and operations positions, pilots, flight attendants and a number of manager and supervisor positions. Job descriptions and applications can be found at AveloAir.com/ careers.
Avelo, a start-up airline, last week announced plans to begin flying between Tweed and four Florida cities — Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, Tampa and Fort Myers — on Nov. 3, using single-class, 147-seat Boeing 737-700 Next Gen aircraft. One-way introductory fares will start at $59, and are now available at AveloAir.com, Chairman and CEO Andrew Levy has said.
Avelo offers competitive compensation, healthcare and retirement benefits as well as “exceptional travel privileges,” the release said.
“We’re on a mission to inspire travel by bringing more convenient and affordable air travel to Connecticut,” said Avelo Head of People Jim Lynde in the release. “This is your chance to help us build a different, better and caring airline devoted to connecting people to the experiences, places and people they value most.
“If you share Avelo’s Soul of Service and passion for travel, let’s talk,” Lynde said.
Avelo has agreed to invest $1.2 million to help upgrade and modernize facilities and operations as part of an overall $100 million project at Tweed which will include a new terminal on the East Haven side of the airport and extended runway.
Tweed’s existing runway would be lengthened by 1,035 feet, from 5,600 feet to 6,635 feet under the plan. The airport, which is owned by New Haven, straddles the line between New Haven and East Haven, with much of its property located within the town.
Meanwhile, Tweed is seeking a 43-year lease extension and a long-term operating agreement with Avports, which has run the airport for 22 years. Avports, a subsidiary of Goldman Sachs, in turn has agreed to finance the improvements, eliminating the need for Tweed’s $1.8 million annual state and city subsidies.
Over time, the airport renovations and expanded ongoing service are expected to create more than 1,000 new jobs at Tweed, the release stated.
“The work we’re doing at HVN is already resulting in much-desired new flights and expanded service, but the truth is, it’s about even more than that — it’s about jobs and economic development,” said Sean Scanlon, executive director of the Tweed New Haven Airport Authority. “For years people have talked about improving this airport to meet the needs of this region. Now we’re doing it, and we’re creating more than 1,000 good-paying local jobs along the way.”
In addition to the career opportunities available with Avelo, Avports plans to hire eight employees by the end of the year. These include positions in the areas of airport operations and management, safety supervision, security and facilities management. Avelo and Tweed will join with New Haven
Works and the Workforce Alliance to hold a career fair Sept. 10 at the airport from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The fair will provide the opportunity to meet representatives from Avelo and
Tweed, learn about each organization’s culture, benefits and career opportunities and apply for roles, the release said.
