Bernard St. George August 23, 2021

-

Devoted father, builder, and educator Bernard Albert “Bernie” St. George passed away peacefully on August 23rd, 2021 in the company of loving family. A longtime resident of Guilford Connecticut, Bernie was 69 and left us too soon. Bernie is survived by his mother Marie, sister Brenda, and brothers Brian and Chris, his sons Ryan, Kyle, Gerard, and Barrett, their spouses, his five grandchildren Ellie, Broderick, Lorelei, Emersyn, and Meara, and all the students, friends, neighbors and souls he reached in his journey. He was predeceased by his father Bernard Sr.

Born in Norwalk, CT on September 1st, 1951, Bernie was the second of four children born to Bernard St. George and Marie (Hammond) St. George. In his youth, Bernie was a devoted member and “bell ringer” of the First Congregational Church in Norwalk and an Eagle Scout. He graduated from Norwalk High School in 1969. He attended Graceland College in Iowa and graduated from UCONN with a degree in Sociology and a plan to help others. Later, he advanced his education with a master’s degree in Technology Education from Central Connecticut State University. Bernie custom built both of his Guilford homes, owned his own carpentry business from 1981 to 1988, taught woodworking for the Lake Grove School of Durham from 1990 to 2006, and taught industrial technology for Hamden High School from 2007 until retirement in 2020. Bernie demonstrated his giving nature by opening his home to several foster children as well as mentoring needy students. He also maintained the neighborhood access road and provided emergency plowing services at all hours of the day for his community during storm events.

Bernie was a giving soul who never asked for anything in return and placed the utmost value on human integrity. He was a woodworker, an outdoorsman, conservationist, boater/fisherman, birder, and animal lover who delivered the awkward “Dad joke” with the best of them. He coached baseball, football, and wrestling for his boys and was an avid fan of the Boston

Red Sox, New York Giants, UCONN Huskies basketball, and any sports teams for which his sons played.

A family-only memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 4th, 2021. Memorial donations can be made in Bernie’s name to the Humane Society, Audubon Society, or Ocean Conservancy. Please visit Bernie’s “Book of Memories” at www. vincentfuneralhome.com for online tributes.
