New Haven’s Holmes signs 7-day contract with Aces

New Haven native and former Hillhouse High star Bria Holmes has signed a seven-day contract with the Las Vegas Aces, the team announced Thursday.

Holmes most recently played for the Los Angeles Sparks, for whom she appeared in 17 games this season, including five starts. The 6-foot-3 guard averaged 4.9 points, 2.8 rebounds and 1.2 assists while shooting 32.6%.

Holmes had spent the previous two seasons with the Connecticu­t Sun and was part of the team’s run to the WNBA Finals in 2018. In 34 games off the bench that season, she averaged 6.3 points and 1.4 rebounds.

A first-round pick (11th overall) of the Atlanta Dream in 2016, Holmes has averaged 6.6 points for her WNBA career.

In high school, Holmes helped lead Hillhouse to three state titles. Holmes was a GameTimeCT State Player of the Year and New Haven Register Female Athlete of the Year, as well as a McDonald’s All-American. She scored a school-record 2,160 points and had her No. 23 jersey retired. She went on to play for West Virginia University.
