North Haven: Ida leaves section of King’s Highway bridge collapsed.
NORTH HAVEN — As the remnants of Hurricane Ida swept across Connecticut this week, part of a bridge on King’s Highway collapsed.
The storm Wednesday night also flooded basements, yards and roads, according to First Selectman Michael Freda.
Freda spoke midday Thursday as he surveyed the damage on King’s Highway near the intersection of Mt. Carmel Avenue.
“We’ve got a significant crevice at the end of King’s Highway,” he said. “Underneath this crevice is the waterway.”
The crevice stretched the full width of the street, Freda said.
Public Work crews were working to fill in the “curb-to-curb indentation,” Freda said. He hoped the road would be operational by Thursday night.
Other town roads heavily affected by flooding included Spring Road, Marlen Drive, Sherwood Drive and Todd Drive South, according to Freda, who said the water level seemed to be subsiding.
“But still there’s significant damage to many homeowners, particularly with basements flooded,” he said.
The first selectman plans to investigate drainage issues.
“Down through the years even North Haven now has experienced a really high water table and saturation levels are at an all-time high,” he said. “Now I’m on a mission” to solve drainage problems.
