Dog rescued from two-alarm blaze in Meriden

- By Ben Lambert and Christine DeRosa

MERIDEN — Meriden firefighters responded to a two-alarm blaze Sunday afternoon, according to the department.

Fire Chief Kenneth Morgan said in an email that the department received a report of a fire on Lambert Avenue around 12:30 p.m. Monday.

The shift commander, figuring this was an actual fire, requested a working assignment while Morgan added an engine company due to the heat and humidity, Morgan wrote.

When engine two arrived, they confirmed a fire in a two-and-a-half story wood building with fire on both the first and second floors, Morgan wrote. This was when the second alarm was declared.

Multiple lines were stretched to the structure and the fire was hampered because of downed power lines and active solar panels, Morgan said in an email.

Meriden Fire utilized all Meriden companies, including South Meriden, and companies including Wallingford, Berlin and Southington were called in on mutual aid.

The cause of the fire is unknown and companies will be on scene for the next hour and a half at the intersection of Lambert and Park Place, which will be closed for a short time, according to Morgan.

Initial reports of a person trapped in the building turned out to be negative, but crews did rescue a dog, which Morgan said was very happy to be out of the fire and with his family.

No firefighters were injured.
