Cops: Man, 45, fatally shot in Fair Haven

NEW HAVEN — A city man was fatally shot in Fair Haven late Monday, according to New Haven police.

Officers responded to Poplar Street between its intersecti­ons with Lombard and Chatham streets around 11:29 p.m., Officer Scott Shumway said.

“Responding officers located a 45-year-old New Haven man who had been struck by gunfire. The victim was pronounced deceased on scene,” Shumway said.

Police later Tuesday identified the man as Fernando Gonzalez-Sandoz, of New Haven.

Shumway asked witnesses to contact the New Haven Police Department Investigat­ive Services Division at 203-946-6304.

He said callers may remain anonymous or submit tips anonymousl­y by calling 1-866-888-TIPS(8477), or texting “NHPD” plus your message to 274637 (CRIMES).

Gonzalez-Sandoz was the 21st homicide victim of the year in New Haven.
