William Alvin Vaughn,

Sr., was born May 19, 1927, in Ansonia, CT, to the late John P. Vaughn and Lottie Hilton Vaughn. He transition­ed peacefully on Thursday, September 9, 2021. William was a World War II veteran, who served for the entertainm­ent division in the European theater. His candor and integrity were recognized even during the segregated war. William was given an extremely important position as a porter who carried around thousands of dollars to pay U.S. Commanders and other high-ranking U.S. military officials. He often spoke of his experience­s of serving for his country and was very proud. Even in his later years, he still attended group activities with the local VFW Post 10321. On his return to the states he became one of the first African American Connecticu­t Auxiliary State Troopers and an operations Manager at the North Haven Pratt & Whitney Plant. He went on to retire from Pratt and Whitney in 1992. William maintained many profession­al membership­s and he held civic and community involvemen­t in high regard. Throughout his life, William was an active member of the Gentlemen’s groups with both St. Luke’s Episcopal and Varick A.M.E. Churches. He also served as the president of the Senior Citizen Associatio­n in New Haven.

Visitation will be on Friday, September 24, 2021 from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. at Howard K. Hill Funeral Services, 1287 Chapel Street, New Haven, CT 06511. Celebratio­n of Life will be Private. Interment will be Hamden Plains Cemetery, Hamden. Services by Howard K. Hill Funeral Services.
