Sophie Oddo DeCarlo

Sophie Oddo DeCarlo, 104, of New Haven, beloved mother, Nana, G.G., passed away peacefully September 19, 2021. Sophie was born in New Haven on September 22, 1917 to the late Jacob and Katherine Bakun Schwatz. She was the widow of Joseph S. Oddo Jr. and Joseph V. DeCarlo. An honor graduate of West Haven High School, Sophie retired from the Office of the Registrar at Yale University in 1983. She was a communicant of St. Michael’s Ukrainian Catholic Church, a member of the Immaculate Conception Society, and a pierogi volunteer.

Sophie rose early and retired late, fulfilling her love of sewing, knitting, crocheting; hobbies of reading, crossword puzzles, and ceramics. Her family is proud of her many ribbons for the afghans and ceramic nativity set from the Durham Fair, collected in her 90s. Mom had a positive attitude, was ready for any challenge, and moved on from sorrows, never dwelling in the past. Sophie leaves to cherish her memory daughter Judith Ellis (Robert), son Joseph Oddo III (Elizabeth), grandchildren Amy Ellis Busher (Peter), Robert Ellis Jr., James Oddo (Sandi), Jon Oddo (Lindsay) and Jason Oddo (Larysa). She also leaves loving greatgrandchildren Jack and Samuel, Charlie and Gracie Mae, Joseph, Riannon and Adriana, Nathan, Calvin, and Madden, and Milana, a dear cousin Johnny Yablonski and several nieces and nephews.

Sophie was predeceased by her sisters Anne P. Schwatz, Leona Grabowski Marenna, and Menya S. Stacken. Sophie’s family is grateful for the exceptional care and guidance from the staff at Apple RehabGuilford.

Visiting hours will be held Friday morning from 8:459:30 in the Iovanne Funeral Home, Inc., 11 Wooster Place in New Haven. Panakhyda at 9:00. A Mass will be celebrated in St. Michael Ukrainian Catholic Church at 10:00. Burial will follow in All Saints Cemetery. Per the City of New Haven, masks must be worn for all indoor services. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Michael’s Ukrainian Catholic Church, 569 George St., New Haven, CT 06511.
