WOODBRIDGE — State police are investigating the death of a New Haven man who was involved in a car crash on a Route 15 overpass Tuesday and then fell to the highway below where he was struck by another vehicle.

Troopers Wednesday identified the victim as 42-year-old Carmelo Agosto of Quinnipiac Avenue in New Haven.

According to the police report, state troopers responded to Route 15 south in the area of Exit 58 for a person in the road around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. The report said troopers found a man, later identified as Agosto, in the right of two lanes.

Agosto had injuries consistent with being hit by a vehicle, the report said. But as troopers investigated, they learned Agosto had been involved in another crash shortly before being hit by the vehicle on Route 15.

Troopers spoke with Woodbridge police, who reported that the victim was involved in a collision on the Route 114 overpass. It’s unclear what time that crash occurred. After that incident, it’s unknown how the victim fell from the overpass into the right lane of Route 15, where he was hit by a vehicle operated by a 48-year-old Orange man, the report said.

Agosto was rushed to Yale New Haven Hospital, where he later died from his injuries, the report said.

Woodbridge Police Chief Frank Cappiello said in an email that town officers responded to investigate multiple reports of a vehicle being driven erratically on Racebrook Road around 7:25 p.m.

“Shortly thereafter it was reported that the vehicle was stopped on Racebrook Rd at the RT 15 overpass, facing northbound in the southbound lane and was unoccupied,” said Cappiello. “The victim’s fall from the bridge was unwitnessed and occurred prior to police arrival on the scene. The vehicle was involved in a minor collision when it made contact with the overpass railing and curbing at that location.”

Anyone with information or who may have seen either crash is asked to contact Trooper Daniel McCue at 203-393-4200.
