Cops: City man arrested after alleged armed standoff
NEW HAVEN — A city man was arrested after an alleged standoff on Winthrop Avenue Wednesday afternoon, according to police.
Laruan Biggs, 18, was charged with criminal possession of a firearm, second-degree strangulation, second-degree unlawful restraint, assault of a pregnant person, seconddegree threatening and second-degree breach of peace, Officer Scott Shumway
said in an email.
Officers were summoned to a domestic violence call on Winthrop Avenue between its intersections with Percival Street and Whalley Avenue around 1:40 p.m., Shumway said.
“Responding officers met with the victim outside of the home, where they learned that the offender, 18-year-old New Haven resident Laruan Biggs, was inside the home in possession of a handgun. Patrol officers set-up a perimeter around the home and attempted, unsuccessfully, to have Biggs exit,” said Shumway.
“The New Haven SWAT Team and Negotiation Team responded to the scene and were able to talk Biggs out of the home without further incident,” said Shumway. “Detectives were able to secure and execute a search warrant that led to the seizure of a .40 cal Smith and Wesson handgun found inside of the home.”
Biggs was held in lieu of a $250,000 bond and was scheduled to be arraigned Thursday, Shumway said.
