Hamden woman dies after apartment fire, official says; man found, rescued
HAMDEN — A woman died from burn injuries and smoke inhalation after a fire in a Hamden apartment building Thursday night that left nine units uninhabitable, according to fire officials.
Cherie Adamczyk, 56, died after she was pulled from the third-floor apartment where the fire originated around 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Fire Marshal Brian Dolan said.
Dolan said units were dispatched to a Kaye Vue Drive apartment building for a reported structure fire and found heavy fire coming from a third-floor window.
When crews searched the apartment and other units, a 21-year-old man was found and rescued from one third-floor apartment and treated at the scene for smoke inhalation, Dolan said.
Adamczyk was found in the bedroom of her apartment, Dolan said. He said firefighters carried her out of the building and administered CPR.
Dolan said she was rushed to Yale New Haven Hospital, where she later died.
Nine units were deemed uninhabitable because of fire, smoke and water damage, Dolan said. Residents were helped to find lodging by the Red Cross and Hamden Community Services .
The fire, which reached a third alarm for additional resources and personnel, originated in the living room of the third-floor apartment where Adamczyk was found, Dolan said.
The fire marshal’s office and the state police Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit continue to investigate the cause of the blaze.
Fire crews from Bethany, Cheshire, New Haven, North Branford and North Haven provided mutual aid and station coverage during the fire.
