GREENWICH — GXO Logistics, which was recently spun off from XPO Logistics, announced this week plans to hire more than 9,000 employees across the United States and Canada ahead of the holiday shopping season.

The Greenwich-headquartered GXO — which employs about 25,000 in the U.S., and describes itself as “the world’s largest pureplay contract logistics provider” — is planning to hire about 35 people to work at the headquarters or its facilities in North Haven and Windsor. The company already employs about 400 workers across those three locations.

California, Georgia, Indiana, Pennsylvania and Texas would be “key states” in the hiring campaign, company officials also said. Worldwide, GXO is recruiting more than 20,000 people.

“We’re proud to offer opportunities to thousands of people across the U.S. and Canada ahead of the busy holiday shopping season,” GXO Chief Human Resources Officer Maryclaire Hammond said in a statement. “When you come to GXO, you can expect to work with terrific colleagues and use our industry-leading technology in an inclusive environment where we invest in your success. We’re looking for outstanding people to join our dynamic team.”

The open positions include salaried, hourly and contractor roles, with flexible shift options and fulland part-time positions.

GXO said it offers sign-on bonuses, hourly wage incentives and other performance-based programs.

Among other major initiatives, GXO announced last week an agreement with Abercrombie & Fitch to open a 715,000-square-foot distribution center in Goodyear, Ariz. Expected to create more than 300 jobs in the Phoenix area, the facility will function as Abercrombie & Fitch’s new hub for its West Coast operations.

At the same time, GXO said it was responding to the “e-commerce surge” by increasing its use automated technology. It plans to deploy 3,100 robots in North America by the end of the year and open nine new automated sites in the U.S. and three in Europe.

In August, the company completed its spin-off from XPO, with the latter operating as one of the world’s largest transporters of commercial goods and ranking as the No. 190 company on this year’s Fortune 500 list.

GXO now operates worldwide with about 94,000 workers spread across 869 warehouse locations totaling 208 million square feet. It works with “the world’s leading blue-chip customers to solve complex logistics challenges with technologically advanced supply chain solutions, at scale and with speed.” It also said it holds 5 percent of the $130 billion “potential addressable logistics market” in North America and Europe.

The GXO headquarters are at 2 American Lane, adjacent to XPO’s headquarters at 5 American Lane, in Greenwich’s northwest corner.
