New Haven police: Man, 42, ‘stable’ after Whalley Avenue shooting

NEW HAVEN — A city man was shot on Whalley Avenue early Friday, according to New Haven police.

Officers responded at 12:02 a.m. for a ShotSpotte­r alert and 911 calls regarding gunfire on Whalley Avenue between its intersecti­ons with Ella T. Grasso Boulevard and Ellsworth Avenue, Officer Scott Shumway said in an email.

“Responding officers located a 42-year-old New Haven man who had been struck by the gunfire. American Medical Response transporte­d the victim to Yale New Haven Hospital where he was listed in stable condition,” said Shumway.

New Haven detectives and officers with the department’s Bureau of Identifica­tion responded to the scene, Shumway said. The case remains under investigat­ion.

Shumway asked that any witnesses who have not yet spoken with the department contact the New Haven Police Department Investigat­ive Services Division at 203-946-6304.

As of Oct. 10, there had been 22 homicides, 89 nonfatal shootings and 280 incidents of shots fired in New Haven this year, according to the latest statistics from police.

At this time last year, there had been 17 homicides, 82 shootings and 173 incidents of shots fired, police reported.

The last time the city saw so many incidents in any of the three categories by this time in the year was 2011, according to the department.

At this point in that year, there had been 26 homicides, 99 nonfatal shootings and 334 incidents of shots fired.
