Xavier holds off Cheshire for wild win

Trailing 21-14 late in the fourth quarter, Cheshire’s Tristan Washington scored on a 94-yard kickoff return but the ensuing kick failed and the Xavier football team held on for a 21-20 SCC win on Friday.

DJ Wright scored on a 10-yard run for the Falcons and Ethan Belzek’s kick, which proved to be the game-winning point, gave Xavier a 21-14 lead.

Drew Kron scored twice for the Falcons, on a 1-yard run and on a 10-yard pass from Max Wojtusik.

BOYS SOCCER

Guilford 1, Lyman Hall 0: Tyler Yerkes scored the game-winning goal at 79:27 to lead the Grizzlies to an SCC win.

Morgan 1, East Hampton 0: Alex Gallardo scored off an assist from Griffin Ranaudo to lead the Huskies to a Shoreline Conference win. Bailey Goss had four saves for the Huskies. Drew Distefano had seven saves for East Hampton.

GIRLS SOCCER

Hand 2, Branford 1: Rory Parri scored the game-winning goal at 71:28 to lead the Tigers to an SCC win. Brooke Salutari had five saves for the Tigers. Lucy Moran gave the Hornets a 1-0 lead at 1:03.

Mercy 6, Wilbur Cross 0: Laney Smith had two goals and an assist to lead the Tigers to an SCC win. Yanit Vasquez had five saves for the Governors.

Sheehan 3, East Haven 1: With the score tied at 1 at halftime, Mia D’Angelo scored at 42:18 and Olivia Platt added an insurance goal at 64:04 to lead the Titans to an SCC win in Wallingfor­d. Gianna Mendez gave the Easties a 1-0 lead at 1:03.

Haven 1: Maddie Epke had three goals and Payton

Root added a goal and three assists to lead the Grizzlies to an SCC win. Nola Coyle had 18 saves for North Haven. Sacred Heart Academy 4, Mercy 0: Stella Carney had a goal and two assists and Isabella Saracco added a goal and an assist to lead the SHArks to an SCC win.
