NORTH HAVEN — A man was charged Saturday night after hitting multiple cars while driving the wrong way on Interstate 91, state police said.

At around 7 p.m. Saturday, troopers responded to a report of a wrong-way driver on I-91 near Exit 12 in North Haven, state police said.

The driver, 55-year-old Matteo Annunziata, of Middletown, was traveling north in the southbound lanes, according to police; he struck three other cars before continuing north, police said.

The occupants of those cars were not injured, according to a police report.

Troopers identified the driver after they found and stopped the car between Exits 14 and 15 in Wallingford. During an investigation, troopers said they determined the driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

The driver sustained minor injuries and was transported to Yale New Haven Hospital for an evaluation.

Annunziata was charged with operation while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, evading responsibility, failure to drive in the proper lane and driving driving the wrong way on a one-way street, state police said.
