Cops: Man kills woman, dies by suicide after recent breakup

WEST HAVEN — A man killed a woman and then died by suicide after their relationship ended, according to the Police Department.

Police were notified of the incident just before 5 a.m. Wednesday. Once on the scene, a witness told officers he heard loud screams coming from a home on Gilbert Street, which had stopped before officers arrived. Officers also encountered a young woman who fled from the back of the home.

Officers went inside the home and found a man and woman dead in the living room area, police said. Officials said the two had apparent stab wounds.

The investigation revealed the couple recently had ended a relationship that had lasted several years. Police said Juan Angel Rivera, 47, killed a 41-year-old woman and then died by suicide.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined the woman’s manner of death as a homicide and Rivera’s manner of death as suicide.
