Margaret Nourse
Margaret Nourse, age 99, passed away on Oct. 16, 2021. Known as “Toots” or Maggie, she was a spitfire born before her time. Resourceful, determined, creative, and independent, she was a force to be reckoned with. She had a short career as a Customer Engineer, but she was mostly a “Mom” and a volunteer in the community. Past president of the Milford Women’s Club, she organized programs for the vets, scholarships, and a multitude of social service projects. Under her leadership in the Milford Art League, she planned the yearly Art Shows. She was both a Girl Scout and Cub Scout Leader. Also, Margaret Nourse was a volunteer at the Milford Hospital, Hazard Waste and Land Trust. Known for her energetic, altruistic personality, she often drove Cancer Patients for their treatment and advocated for those who couldn’t.
Well known as a resident in the Milford Shoreline Community called Morningside, Margaret cut the grass and planted flowers around the Morningside Flag Pole well into her 90s. The triangular space surrounding the flag pole is the community focal point in all traditional Morningside activities, ceremonies and special occasions. In honor of Margaret’s extraordinary dedication to Morningside preservation and beautification, this site is known as The Margaret Nourse Green.
Margaret Nourse was predeceased by her husband, David Nourse and her daughter, Carolyn Mulvey. After her daughter’s death a year and a half ago, Margaret’s heart was broken. She is lovingly remembered by her younger daughter, Janice O’Brien and her fiancé, Glenn Ferguson; and her son; David Nourse and his wife, Karen Nourse. She will forever be cherished by her four grandchildren; David Nourse and his wife, Rachel Nourse; Carolyn O’Brien and her husband, Enrique Sevillano; Helen Nourse and her fiancé, Lucas Roca; and Constance O’Brien and her fiancé, Cooper Clark. Margaret was blessed with one great grandchild, Iola Nourse. An active mom and grandmother, Margaret loved all family get-togethers. She enjoyed canoeing, hiking, and traveling with her family. She frequented museums with her grandchildren, babysat with them in their younger years and supported their educational pursuits. Close also to her four brothers; her brother, Walter Altvater will miss their weekly tea together and her brother, Robert Altvather will miss their many carpentry projects. Her brothers Fredrick Altvather and Carl Altvater passed away several years ago.
In addition to Margaret Nourse’s passion for her family and the community, she enjoyed crafts - everything from knocking down house walls to caning chairs. She was given several awards on a state level for her hand painted ceramics through the Women’s’ Club. Margaret was also an excellent seamstress.
In light of the Corona Virus, there will be a graveside ceremony for the immediate family only. Memorial Donations may be sent to Vitas-Hospice, 199 Park Rd. Ext Unit 102 Middlebury, Ct. 06762
