HAMDEN — A food delivery and ride sharing driver was charged Wednesday after attempting to break into the homes of female customers, according to police.

Around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, Hamden police officers responded to a home on Kimberly Road for a report of an attempted residential burglary.

Police said a female college student was in her house when someone attempted to break into the home through a window.

The student shined a flashlight toward the window, prompting the suspect to flee on foot, according to the Police

Department.

A short time later, police responded to a nearby home on West Woods Road for a similar complaint. A suspect entered an unlocked back door of a home while a female college student was asleep. The student woke up to the suspect standing at the foot of her bed. The student started to yell and the suspect fled, police said.

No one was injured in either incident, police added.

Police found the suspect’s vehicle in the neighborhood and attempted to stop him. The suspect fled, but was later apprehended by state police on Interstate 84.

Officers found evidence in the car, but did not specify what it was.

Police identified the suspect as Adiel Viana-Ribeiro, 24, of Bridgeport. Viana-Ribeiro delivers food and drives passengers for different apps. Police said he targeted houses where he previously made deliveries to women.

Viana-Ribeiro is charged with first-degree burglary, criminal attempt to commit first-degree burglary, second-degree criminal mischief, sixth-degree larceny, engaging police in a pursuit and reckless driving.

He was held in lieu of a $50,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court Dec. 29.
