Suzanne Rogers
Suzanne Longley Rogers of Guilford and New Bern, NC died February 13, 2022 at home, surrounded by her family. She was 91.
Susie was born on June 21, 1930 in Hudson, NY, to Frederick and Elizabeth Longley. She grew up in Hudson and Claverack, NY. She spent summers with her cousins at their grandmother’s home on Martha’s Vineyard. Susie attended Connecticut College. While there she met George Sterling Rogers while he attended Yale. He was from Kinderhook, NY, and they married in upstate NY in 1951
They settled in Durham and Cheshire, CT. Susie enjoyed photography, flower and vegetable gardening, cooking, entertaining and raising her four children. She also volunteered at Gaylord Rehabilitation Center, in Wallingford; work that she deeply loved. Susie and George retired to Martha’s Vineyard in 1986.
While on the Vineyard she and George volunteered as Big Brother and Big Sister to island children; operated the Island Food Pantry; served as Hospice volunteers; were Eucharistic visitors for
Grace Church; and delivered Meals on Wheels.
In 2002 they moved to Guilford to be closer to family. She was active at Christ Episcopal Church and the ECW there. Susie moved to New Bern, NC in 2017 to live with her daughter Kathryn and her family.
She was predeceased by her husband George in 2003, and a grandson Colin in 1990. She is survived by her four children: (The Rev’d) Elizabeth Page Rogers of Niantic; Michael Sterling Rogers (Carolyn Williams) of Cheshire; Christopher Longley Rogers of Coventry, RI; and Kathryn Ashton Bartels of New Bern, NC. She is also survived by her four granddaughters: Kelly Najera-Morales; Ashton Vickery Rodgers; Lauren Sterling Nyborg; and Megan Suzanne Rogers.
A memorial service will be held at Christ Episcopal Church, 11 Park St., Guilford on Sat. March 12 , 2022 at 1:30 pm. Masks are required. Burial will be on the Vineyard at the convenience of the family. Memorial donations may be made to: The Island Food Pantry, P.O. Box 622, Vineyard Haven, MA 02568-0622, or a charity of your choice.
