Donald Paul Marchione, 88, formerly of Hamden, died on Monday, February 21, 2022, at Apple Rehab in Guilford. Don was born in New Haven on July 31, 1933 and was the son of the late Matteo and Julia Miller Marchione. Don graduated from St. Mary’s High School in New Haven in 1952 and then from the University of Notre Dame in 1956. After college, he enlisted in the United States Army and served from 1956 to 1958. Don enjoyed a 36-year career as a reporter for the New Haven Register, beginning in 1959 and continuing until his retirement in 1995. His journalism career began as a court reporter, writing about high profile crimes like murder cases, before moving on to being a general assignment reporter. One highlight was writing about his interview with Bob Hope, the legendary comedian, just before Hope performed at the New Haven Veterans Coliseum soon after the venue opened in 1972. For the last part of his career, Don was an obituary writer at the Register. He remained a longtime devotee to print news, even in retirement often buying several different newspapers to read. Don was an ardent fan of the Fighting Irish, the New York Yankees, and the New York Football Giants. He was an avid reader, and an uberfan of James Thurber, and books about baseball. He cherished the opportunities he had to travel in Europe, both during his military service and later in life. A beloved uncle, Don is survived by six nieces and nephews, as well as a number of grandnieces and grandnephews. He religiously called his sister, Judy, nightly and relished the family news, from mundane to milestones, and was delighted by everyone’s successes and travel opportunities. He was predeceased by his brother Matthew Marchione and his sister Judith M. Shea.

Don’s family would like to thank the staff at Apple Rehab in Guilford for taking such exceptional care of him, and for befriending him during the last 18 months of his life.

The family requests that donations in lieu of flowers be sent to Apple Rehab, Recreation Fund, 10 Boston Post Road, Guilford, CT 06437, (203) 453-3725.
