Joan Walsh

-

Joan Walsh ( neé Maxwell ) late of Stage Harbor Road, Chatham, died peacefully on Sunday 20th March, having just turned 97 in February. She had been lovingly cared for by the staff and volunteers of Liberty Commons nursing home.

A proud Irish woman from Dromod, County Leitrim in Ireland, Joan sought new opportunities boarding the Queen Mary to the United States in 1947. Settling with family New Haven , Connecticut, was to become her new home where she would meet her devoted husband of over fifty years, John Francis Walsh, a war veteran.

Together they worked hard to build a secure and loving home matched with much success in their professional lives. With an aptitude for figures and a sharp mind, Joan completed a graduate accountant degree following on to become a graduate of Connecticut Realtors Institute. From 1982 Joan worked for many years with Beazley Realtors of

New Haven, becoming one of the most successful and popular employees.

Fittingly her home was her castle both in Cleveland Road in New Haven and later at Stage Harbor Road to where she and John retired, tending to her garden of roses and taking delight in nature watching and visiting birds, squirrels and foxes.

A woman of great taste with a keen eye for fashion she never missed a good sale at Macys! While always enjoying music and dance Joan was also an avid reader. Her generosity to her family was a strong trait especially to nieces and nephews, remembering each birthday with cards and parcels and a few newspaper clippings and cartoons to make you smile !

She encouraged and supported all the family with a strong emphasis on the importance of a good education.

Having been one of a family of nine, with three brothers, Stephen, John and Michael, and five sisters, Lena, Mary (who lived close by in New Haven ), Phyllis, Margaret and her remaining younger sister Bridget Dunne of Glenageary, Dublin.
