5 affected by fire in Newhallville area of New Haven

- By Peter Yankowski

NEW HAVEN — The American Red Cross said it’s helping two families — including a child — after a fire broke out in a home in the city’s Newhallville neighborhood Sunday.

Firefighters were called to the 20 block of Lander Street, where they found fire on the top floor of the two-family home. The blaze was quickly brought under control, according to fire officials.

A photo of the scene posted to Facebook showed no apparent damage to the exterior of the building on Lander Street, but showed crews used a ladder truck to gain access to the pitched roof of the home.

Property records show the house was built in 1920.

The Red Cross said five people — four adults and one child — were affected by the blaze, and the organization “provided assistance to meet the families’ immediate needs.”
