WEST HAVEN — A Shelton man has been charged with robbing two local stores at gunpoint last week, police announced Thursday.

A clerk at Krauszer's on Campbell Avenue was robbed at gunpoint around 2 a.m. on May 4, police said. Police said the man ordered the clerk to the floor and left the store with the contents of the cash register.

Later in the day, police said a second armed robbery took place at the York Street Market by the same suspect.

Police said they discovered the make and model of the suspect's car and identified the suspect as John Bradford, 37, of Shelton. Police said they saw Bradford driving the car near Greta Street. Police said they stopped the car and found Bradford with a 9 mm pistol, which they believe was used in both robberies.

Bradford was charged with two counts of first-degree robbery, criminal possession of a firearm, criminal use of a firearm, carrying a pistol without a permit and two counts of sixth-degree larceny, according to court records.

Bradford is being held on a $500,000 bond, police said Thursday.

Bradford is scheduled to appear in state Superior Court in Milford on May 24 for a plea hearing, court records state.
