Dorothy Grace Althoff, age 77, of Hamden, Connecticu­t, passed away on February 14, 2022, in Fort Myers Beach, Florida. She was born in Bay Shore, New York in April 1944 to Rev. Lauren D. York, Sr. and Grace Benedict York, living for many years in Sea Cliff, New York. She graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University in l966 and was married to Michael Althoff that September. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her daughter, Patty and sonin-law John Conte; and her daughter, Jane and son-inlaw Doug Lagomarsin­o; her grandchild­ren, JD Conte and Emily Conte; her brother and sister-in-law, L. David York and Suzanne York; sisters-in-law Meg Maxwell and Kit Alexander; several nieces and nephews and their children; and many dear and treasured cousins and friends.

After Dottie and Mike moved to Hamden, Connecticu­t in 1971, she led the preschool program at the Hamden/North Haven YMCA and then went on to become the Program Director there. Soon after, she became the owner and operator of the Evergreen Shop in Hamden, a gift and craft shop where she specialize­d in framing and quilting. She also was a beloved tutor in the Hamden elementary schools for over twenty years, primarily at

West Woods. One of her favorite interests was singing alto in the Greater New Haven Community Chorus for 26 years, serving in many board positions.

Dorothy was known by all for her kindness and generosity, and she shared with others her love of quilt and jelly making. She was an avid reader and gardener and dedicated Red Sox and UCONN basketball fan.

She enjoyed watching every game and spending time with her family and grandchild­ren.

Dottie’s family will be hosting a memorial service at Lockwood Farm, located at 890 Evergreen Avenue in Hamden, Connecticu­t, on May 21 at 1:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dorothy’s memory to a charity of your choice or to the Greater New Haven Community Chorus at PO Box 351, New Haven, CT 06502 or at www.gnhcc.org .
