Record day for Hillhouse senior, Academics win title

- By Dan Nowak

NEW HAVEN — Gary Moore Jr. came away with wins in the shot put, discus and javelin, including two meet records, to lead the Hillhouse boys track team to the team title with 122 points at the Southern Connecticut Conference Outdoor Track Championships at Bowen Field on Tuesday.

Moore won the shot put in a meet-record 65 feet. A week ago, he set the state record in the shot put with a throw of 66-4.75 at the SCC Western Sectional meet. At the SCC Championship meet he won the discus in a meet record 186-8 and also won the javelin (175-11).

“You always want to do well and contribute to the team’s success,” said

Moore, named the SCC boys meet Most Outstanding Athlete. “I was really confident going into the shot put and discus. I was a little worried about the javelin because I had a rough start with it this season. But it’s getting better, all my events have been getting better the last couple of weeks.

“Last year my season started getting better once the SCC meets started and the same thing is happening this season. That 66 for the state (record) seemed to come out of nowhere. Up to that point I was throwing 55s and 57s.”

Xavier ended up second in the boys team results with 81 points and Hand was third with 64.

“This was an amazing meet for us,” said Hillhouse boys outdoor track coach Michele Moore, who is also Gary Moore Jr.’s mother. “This was one of the most complete teams we have had here since I stated coaching in 1995. The athletes contributed in every phase, from the runners and hurdlers to the field events, with the throwers really being a standout for us today.”

Also contributing wins

for Hillhouse were Zyair Wali in the high jump (6-4) and Tremayne Sweat in the pole vault (12-0).

WINTERS LEADS SHEEHAN GIRLS TO REPEAT TITLE

Avery Winters, named the girls SCC meet co-Most Outstanding Athlete, won the 400 (58.52) and 200 (25.87) to lead the Titans to their second straight SCC Outdoor Track Championship title with 141 points. Shelton was second with 81 points and Hillhouse was third with 69. Sheehan won its first SCC outdoor title in 2021. “Avery had a great meet, but everyone did a little it to get us where we are today,” Sheehan girls outdoor track coach Charles Farley said. “Avery Winters won the 400 (58.52) and 200 (25.87) and Amanda Castaldi won the 100 (13.01). We also had depth in almost every event.”

INTERESTING DAY FOR KOZEK

It was an interesting day for Audrey Kozek of Shelton who showcased both her maturity and talent to overcome adversity. In both the long jump and triple jump, it came down to her final jump to qualify for the finals and her final jump in the final round to win both events. She won the long jump (18-3), triple jump (36-10.5) and high jump (5-3). “I came into this meet really optimistic and confident I would do well,” said Kozek, named the girls SCC meet co-Most Outstanding Athlete. “When it came down to the final jumps to get in the finals and win the final, all that optimism went out the window. Each time I told myself I could do it and was determined to get the win. “I’ve also had a mental block in the high jump this year but was able to pull that off and win it.” GOOD DAY FOR HILLHOUSE GIRLS Olivia O’Connor of Hillhouse came away with two wins for the Academics in the shot put (37-10.75) and a meet record in the discus (130-11). Leonaya Knox won thd 100 hurdles (15.07). “I’m happy I won both events, it means everything to me,” O’Connor said. “After today I’m going to keep working on the shot put and get my distance back up to 38 or 39.”

CLOSE ONE IN THE BOYS 100

Colin Brown of Cheshire and Ralphael Hawkins of Hillhouse produced the closest finish of the day in the 100 dash. Brown won with a time of 11.113 and Hawkins was second in 11.116. “I planned to stay behind the leaders, but everyone went out slow,” Brown said. “I went out in front and just ran hard the whole way. I didn’t know how close it was until we crossed the finish line.”
