Candida “Candy” Nuzzo Heffernan of Hamden, died peacefully on August 29, 2022 at home, surrounded by her loving family and caregivers. She was the wife of the late Thomas Heffernan.

Candy was born in New Haven on November 9,

1925, to the late Antony and Catherine Malerba Nuzzo and was a graduate of Hillhouse High School. She met and married her husband, Tom, and after raising their children, she joined her husband in the day-to-day operation of Hollywood Package Store on Grand Avenue. Candy enjoyed hosting holidays for the family. She was an excellent cook and baker and was famous for her “chinese chews” cookies.

She was the loving mother of John (Liz) Heffernan, Jean Heffernan and Linda Cadan. Sister of the late Martha, Anthony, Michael and Rocco Nuzzo. She was the proud and loving grandmothe­r to Alicia Almeida, Jake Heffernan, Fred and David Ciaburro, Seth and Samuel Cadan; and great-grandmothe­r to Alex, Matthew and Luke Almeida, Nico and Luca Ciaburro.

Candy’s family would like to thank the exceptiona­l caregivers who provided “Miss Candy” with kindness and dedication. A special thank you to Linda, Marie, Mittie and Mary Ann and the staff at VNA Hospice.

Visiting hours will be Friday morning from 9:0010:30am in the Iovanne Funeral Home, Inc., 11 Wooster Place, New Haven. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Michael Church at 11:00am.
